SPLAT - Art at the heart of the community - Broxburn

Art at the heart of the community

10 November 2005

Strathbrock Partnership Centre in Broxburn becomes a major new art gallery on Tuesday 15 November when voluntary arts organisation "SPLAT" unveils its opening exhibition of 150 original artworks.

SPLAT (Strathbrock Partnership Local Arts Team) is a new organisation created when seven individual arts groups from across West Lothian joined forces to make the Strathbrock gallery a reality.

Tuesday's opening is the culmination of 18 months of hard work - meetings, funding applications even supermarket bag packing - to build up sufficient funds to buy the professional hanging system, frames and mounts for this ambitious exhibition space. SPLAT's funding partners are the Scottish Arts Council, West Lothian Council, and local sponsors including Scotmit, Lloyds Pharmacy.

Opening the inaugural exhibition Councillor Graeme Morrice, Leader of West Lothian Council said:

"I am delighted to open this exciting exhibition which really does bring art into the heart of the community. The Strathbrock Partnership Centre continues to break new ground as a community resource and this stunning exhibition is testimony to the range of high quality visual arts being produced today in West Lothian. I am sure that the interaction between the arts groups and the wider community will benefit both. I commend the commitment of the groups which have, somehow, found the additional time and dedication required to tackle this very large project. This exhibition is already a huge achievement and I know that SPLAT has a range of plans in place for the future. I look forward to hearing news of their progress".

Each of the paintings, drawings and photographs on display is an original artwork and many are available for sale. In addition to continuous development of the exhibition, SPLAT intends to provide an arts forum, a series of workshops and demonstrations both for users of the centre and the wider community.
